The J. League (officially Meiji Yasuda J1 League) is the top division of professional football in Japan, founded in 1993. Established to develop football at a professional level in Japan, the league has grown into one of Asia's most competitive and well-organised competitions. Kashima Antlers are the most successful club in J. League history. The league played a central role in developing football culture in Japan, contributing directly to the national team's qualification for every FIFA World Cup since 1998. In recent years the league has attracted experienced international players looking to extend their careers at the highest level in Asia.
