Ligue 2 League Format

Ligue 2 is the second tier of French football, operating directly below Ligue 1. The league features 18 clubs, with the top two promoted automatically to Ligue 1 and additional promotion spots decided by play-offs. Ligue 2 is a competitive and well-attended division that regularly features recently relegated Ligue 1 clubs alongside ambitious sides with aspirations of top-flight football. The division has served as a formative ground for many players and managers who went on to significant success in Ligue 1 and beyond.
