Brighton produced one of their best displays this season to defeat Manchester United at the Amex Stadium. The win was enough to ensure the safety of the Seagulls with one game to spare.
The loss completed a hat-trick of defeats to the three newly promoted teams (Huddersfield, Newcastle, and Brighton).
The newly-promoted side started on a good note by asking the right questions at United’s defense. Chris Hughton’s lads looked like a different team that had already lost to the Red Devils in both League and Cup fixtures. United barely troubled Brighton’s goalkeeper in the first-half due to limited opportunities.
However, Both teams ended the first 45 minutes with a goalless draw. But before the hour mark, the host’s effort was rewarded when they pushed forward and the cross of Izquidero met the head of Pascal Gross who powered in home to give them the lead. United regained momentum after conceding the goal but failed to get the equalizer even with the introduction of Luke Shaw and Lingard to help the attack.
In the post-match conference, Mourinho criticised the display of his players claiming it was not good enough after making wholesale changes by starting the likes of Rashford, Anthony Martial and Fellaini who was rewarded for scoring the winning goal against Arsenal.
“So maybe now you understand why some players play more than others, and you don’t ask all the time why A, B, and C don’t play more.”
“Why always Lukaku? Why always Lukaku? Why always Lukaku? You have the answer why always Lukaku! So why always this? Why always this? You have the answer why always this!
