Like every other club, Manchester United has also come off worse following their head-to-head battle with Lionel Messi. They had been able to keep him from assisting or scoring a goal during the first two times they faced this talented forward from Argentina in the semi-finals of Champions League 2008. However, they couldn’t stop him in 2009 and 2011 finals of Champions League.
Lionel Messi has scored in Rome and again after two years at Wembley condemning the team of Sir Alex Ferguson to 2 finals defeats of Champions League in three season’s space. Ferguson couldn’t do anything about it and had admitted that Manchester United had been defeated by the superior team after the final of 2011. He said that they had been beaten and there is no way that he can address the situation. However, he says that he expected that they are going to better and yet had been defeated at the end of the day by a better team of Europe. He says that there is no shame in being defeated by a strong team. At times you will have to fight against a better team and it had been one of those nights.
Nevertheless, this defeat has left them with a bitter taste in Ferguson who is aware that he could have put an end to his managerial career with over two European Cups if the team hadn’t met the legendary team of Pep Guardiola in those two finals.
