RIP: Udo Lattek, the most successful coach of Germany dies at 80

The most successful coach of Bundesliga Udo Lattek dies at 80. Football lost another legend in the name of Udo Lattek who passed away at the age of eight years. With total of 14 major titles, Lattek is one of the most successful coaches in the history of the game, and the most successful coach with German teams, especially Bayern Munich. In a statement, the German Football Association President Wolfgang Niersbach said “Udo Lattek was not only the most successful coach in Bundesliga history, he was already during his lifetime a legend and we will miss him.”

Lattek won the highest number of Bundesliga [8], six with Bayern Munich and two with Gladback. He took over Bayern in 1970 after a recommendation from Franz Beckenbauer, then a Bayern player, having no previous club coaching experience but a five year stint as West Germany’s assistant coach. He mostly coached German club during his coaching career.

Teams managed by Uddo Lattek: Bayern Munich, Borussia Monchengladbach, Borussia Dortmund, Barcelona, FC Koln and Schalke 04.

Bayern’s chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said “Udo Lattek was one of the most successful German coaches. For decades he was also one of the big personalities of the sport, nationally and internationally. We have lost one of the big men of Bayern Munich, a personal supporter and a friend.”

Bundesliga president Dr. Reinhard Rauball said “The Bundesliga is mourning the passing of an extraordinary sportsman and an extraordinary person. Like many in German football, I am losing a friend in Udo Lattek. We got to know and appreciate one another other 30 years ago. Honest, straightforward and sometimes stubborn – that was how Udo Lattek stood out. yet at the same time he was also sensitive, and as a coach he was always receptive to the needs of his players.”

The president later added “his success speaks for itself and eight German league titles will remain unmatched for a long time to come. he left an impression on several generations of players in German football and many of his former charges are still grateful to him to this day. Udo Lattek will be remembered as one of the Bundesliga’s outstanding figures. I extend my deepest sympathies to his wife and family.”
