Malcom’s move to Barcelona may be the end of Willian pursuit

With the recent capture of Brazilian winger, Malcolm for a £36m fee from Ligue 1 side Bordeaux. Spanish Champions Barcelona may have signaled an end to the pursuit of Chelsea winger Willian de Borges.

The Catalans wrapped up the League and Copa del Rey in style last campaign, but still felt they needed to replace Neymar who joined French Champions PSG in a world record transfer fee. The acquisition of Dembele from Dortmund didn’t live up to the expectation as he was sidelined for the most part of the season.

That led the Spanish giants to seek for a winger who will bring the spark in attack. Chelsea’s winger Willian was the name on the lips of every Barca faithful after impressing at the World Cup. However, the Blues refuted and never budged at the transfer fee of 70 million pounds.

FC Barcelona felt the Brazilian winger currently 29, was a little overpriced then decided to make an 11th-hour bid for the exciting young winger in Bordeaux who was all set for a switch to FC Roma. The 21-year-old primarily operates down the right flank, as does his countryman Willian, thus rendering a transfer for the Chelsea man unnecessary.

With the transfer window coming close to an end, it seems the F.A Cup winners are winning the battle to hold on to their star players. Recent reports suggest, new manager Maurizio Sarri is set to hold talks with key players concerning their future, but that hasn’t prevented top European clubs from making bids.

Hazard and Courtois are currently targeted by Real Madrid, while N’Golo Kante who was brilliant at the World Cup has been linked to a move to PSG. The fight for Willian’s signature may still be far from over considering that Manchester United may make a late swoop, with Martial’s future at the club looking bleak.

With just over two weeks remaining until the start of the Premier League season, Chelsea fans will be hoping there won’t be an exodus of big-name players ahead of what could be a defining campaign in the Club’s history.
