Gareth Southgate has recalled 34 y.o. centre-forward to the England squad. It’ll be his chance to make an international appearance since 2013.
The invitation is a reward for an outstanding form in the Premier League. He scored 14 league goals but was overlooked by Sam Allardyce, who also had been England boss and Defoe’s coach.
And while Harry Kane was weakened by the injury Southgate decided to give a chance to Sunderland’s forward. “It was funny. When I saw a message on my phone it was from Gareth. Who is Gareth? I don’t know him” says Jermain Defoe.
“Then we had a good chatting and agreed to meet. Also, I said that he kicked me and we had a good laugh about it. Still, he’s a nice man and I’ve always had respect for him”, continues Jermain.
Southgate also says that Defoe is an outstanding striker, “I didn’t want to look at the age. He’s somebody who proud to represent England in any age group. Young players have their points to prove, but older players had to prove much more. And I think Jermain still know that”.
In his age, Jermain Defoe has hardly a look to the future in the England squad from the rookie boss. Still, they had a youthful element in the face of Marcus Rashford who also was called. With striking corps like that, they have all the chances.
A first friendly match against Germany will be on 22 March before a World Cup qualifier, and vs Lithuania at Wembley on 26 March. See the fixture on Footballwood and don’t miss.
Thanks to everyone for your messages! Playing for @England has been my dream since day one so to be back in the squad is so special for me.
