FC Pune City have started the 2016 Indian Super League season quite inconsistently. They preformed very good on the road and grabbed the victory against FC Goa, but have only earned one point from three home fixtures. For a team that has traditionally struggled away from Pune this is bad news for head coach Antonio Habas, who returns to the dugout for this game after serving out his four-match ban carried forward from 2015. Pune are not very good in the games against Chennaiyin and have never beaten them, and in fact have lost three straight fixtures since a 1–1 stalemate in Pune back in November 2014. They will be hoping that the presence of head coach Habas will encourage them in what is effectively the first match of the two championship-winning head coaches in Indian Super League history. Meanwhile, the defending champions Chennaiyin FC are bit by bit starting to find their rhytm, especially ever since head coach Marco Materazzi has shown a disire to shuffle his squad. Karanjit Singh was selected as a goalkeeper against FC Goa in their first victory of the campagin, and this has freed up the possibility of playing an extra foreign player in the outfield. If the marquee player Bernard Mendy was rested in the game against Goa, he returned at the expense of the Norvegian star left-back John Arne Riise and put in a fantastic performance against NorthEast United. Chennai have fond memories of the Balewadi Stadium too; as they won both their league games against Pune City in 2014 and 2015, and in their last appearance here, when they had to ‘host’ Habas’ former team Atletico de Kolkata owing to the floods in Chennai, running out 3–0 winners and taking a big step towards the 2015 final.
