Austria grabbed a narrow 1–2 road win over Georgia in their qualification stage opener, keeping them second in the table with 3 points. 2 first half strikes from Hinteregger and Janko was enough to give the all-important 3 points. A win in this fixture will keep them top of the new-born group table as they are on same point with current leaders Wales. On the other hand, Wales currently sit atop the group after a convincing 4–0 demolishing of Moldova in their first match. This followed on from an unbelievable run of form in France in the summer. They defeated Slovakia and Russia either side of an unfortunate defeat to England to qualify top of their group, setting up a knockout stage battle with Northern Ireland. They ultimately broke them down and won 1–0 before shockingly defeating the young and gifted Belgium 3–1 in the quarter finals. They were deservedly beat in the semi finals by eventual winners Portugal, but overall it was a brilliant tournament for Wales and will give them a lot of hope for the future. Though, the next game will be one of Wales’ toughest tests during the current qualifying stage. Austria Vs Wales: Head-to-Head Stats Austria have won three, drawn one, and lost two of their six meetings with Wales, with the last one being a 2–1 Wales win in a friendly in 2013.
