James Rodriguez was the first penalty kick taker of the game. The Real Madrid midfielder made no mistake and sent the ball into the back of the net. For Argentina, captain Lionel Messi took the responsibility of their first penalty kick. He equalized the goal of Rodriguez and the score leveled on 1–1.

It was Radamel Falcao who took second penalty kick for Colombia and scored, but it was again cancelled by Garay. Chelsea’s Juan Cuadrado was the third penalty kick taker and scored at same corner as that of Radamel Falcao.

It took 95 minutes, 16 shots and 14 penalty kicks, but Argentina finally saw off the robust challenge of Colombia to reach the last four of this South American football championship. The pre-tournament favorites dominated this quarter final start to finish but had to rely on the boot of Carlos Tevez to win a dramatic penalty shoot-out in Vina del Mar football ground.

Argentina have now qualified for the semi final of Copa America 2015. They will now face the winners of Brazil vs Paraguay match.
