Argentina must move on without Messi- Veron

Former Manchester United player Juan Sebastian Veron believes that the time has come for the Argentine national team to move on with life without star man Lionel Messi

The Argentine Captain failed to deliver at the World Cup this summer and ended the campaign with just a solitary strike to his name as L’Albiceleste crashed out in the second round to eventual winners France.

Messi’s future with the national team has once more been called into question after failing to win a silverware with the team in the recent tournament.

The 31-year-old has reached two Copa America and a World Cup final with La Albiceleste, but he has lost in each of them and had retired in 2016 before being persuaded to return.

However, one man believes that it is time for the national side to end its obsession with Messi and face the prospects ahead. Juan Sebastian Veron has been vocal about his views of the team he once played for as a midfielder.

“It’s time to build a group,” Veron told ESPN Argentina.

“Obviously, if Leo is eager [to be part of the national team], they would need to involve him little by little.

“I think we have to prepare the base and once and for all think about a team and not think about someone who can save us.

“Even more at this time, watching other national teams and how they faced the World Cup, it seems essential to think about a group.”

Messi holds the record of the all-time top scorer in the history of the national team having scored 65 goals in 128 appearances.
