Zidane steps down as Madrid boss

Zinedine Zidane has left his post as Real Madrid manager despite leading the club to an unprecedented treble in Europe.

The news came as a shock for most Madrid fans who thought the French man will continue as Los Blancos manager next season.

Zidane, 45, was brought in as a replacement of Spanish boss Benitez who had a turbulent campaign in January 2016. He went on to guide the club to a Champions League triumph that same season.

On the other hand, he has come under intense scrutiny and criticism for not replicating his success in the home front with one La Liga title in his reign as the boss.

It’s believed he informed Real president Florentino Perez he would be leaving on Wednesday before informing captain Sergio Ramos.

“I know it is a strange moment for everyone involved,” said Zidane. “But it had to be done for everybody.

“This team has to continue winning and need a change. After three years they need a new voice, a new way of saying things – possibly another way of working.

“That’s why I’ve taken that decision. I love this club, I love the president, he’s given me the chance to come as a player and a manager. I’m eternally grateful to him but today for me and for everyone we have to change.”

Perez was equally shocked with the decision as he revealed it came as a surprise for a man who led the club to three consecutive Champions League titles making it the 13th in the Club’s history.

“It is a sad day for me and will be for the fans, the players and everyone at the club,” said Perez. “I wanted him to be next to me forever. But I know it is his final decision.

“I would have liked to convince him to stay on but I know what he is like.”

More news will follow in the coming weeks on who will take over the helm of affairs.
