Rooney has scored 53 times in 119 appearances, which makes him all-time goal scorer in England. He also holds more England cups than anyone in the world. And when England manager called Rooney on Tuesday for inviting him in the squad, former Man United captain told about his retirement.

Official statement from Rooney: “I appreciated that Gareth Southgate called me and told he wants me back in the England squad. However, I told Gareth that I’m retiring from international football, having thought long and hard. I have discussed it with my family and Everton’s manager. It’s really tough decision for me“.

“Every time I was selected as a captain or a player it was a real privilege. Time spent in the squad is very special to me, but I believe now is time to bow out”, said Rooney.

He added that leaving from Manchester was a hard but right decision. And now he focuses all the energy on helping them be successful.
