UEFA set to introduce VAR in Champions League

UEFA are considering the option of introducing VAR in the latter stages of this season’s Champions League.

The World Cup in Russia welcomed the introduction of video assistant referees with overall success.

And the Times reports UEFA is working on a plan for the system to come into play from the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

There had been doubts over using VAR in Europe’s premier competition due to the human resources required for eight group matches on the same night

But UEFA believes by introducing it for the Champions League latter stages; they can gradually integrate it into the competition as they accurately monitor the system.

A decision is likely to be made by the end of the month at a meeting of UEFA’s executive committee.

UEFA are also likely to consider using VAR at Euro 2020 but will wait before making a decision.

The Champions League group stage draw will take place on August 30 in Monaco.
