Stoke kicked their Premier League campaign off pretty badly. A six match winless run saw them miss out on the chance to claim their best ever Premier League finish last term, and they started the new season by failing to defeat the freshly promoted novice Middlesbrough. They followed this 1–1 draw with a late breakdown against Pep Guardiola’s City, losing 4–1 at home in what used to be a formidable home ground. They did manage to rise their morale with a 4–0 demolition of Stevenage in the League Cup, but it didn’t help them as they lost 1–0 to Everton in a cheerless performance at the weekend. This inspired them into transfer deadline day additions as they sealed deals for the likes of striker Wilfried Bony and central defender Bruno Martins Indi. Bony in particular could be a huge help to them if he can rediscover his Swansea goalscoring form.
Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur haven’t shown many signs of competing at the top of the Premier League again so far this season. They opened the new campaign with a 1–1 stalemate with Everton and then got a rather uninspiring 1–0 win at home to Crystal Palace. A 1–1 draw at home to Liverpool followed, and this is before the tiresome Champions League has even begun for them. Spurs have bolstered their squad in the summer in preparation for the fixture congestion, they bought the likes of Moussa Sissoko, Georges Kevin Nkoudou and Paul Lopez on the deadline day.
