Spain has sacked manager Julen Lopetegui just a few hours to the start of the FIFA 2018 World Cup in Russia.
Lopetegui was announced as the new coach of La Liga powerhouse Real Madrid on Tuesday, following the exit of former boss Zinedine Zidane.
Initial confirmation from the Spanish FA said the 51-year-old would depart following the World Cup, but on Wednesday federation president Luis Rubiales confirmed that Lopetegui has been removed from his post just two days before Spain’s Group B opener against Portugal.
Reports from Spain suggest the timing of Madrid’s announcement was wrong considering the manager had a contract with the Spanish FA.
