Spain and Portugal survive late scare to scrape through

Iberian neighbors Spain and Portugal survived a late scare in their respective games to qualify for the round of 16.

The Spaniards set up a last 16 tie with Russia after a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Morocco thereby topping the group in the process. While Fernando Santos tutored, side lost their position at the top after sharing the spoils in a 1-1 draw with Iran in what culminated in a nerve wrecking ending to the tie.

Both teams were fans favorites to progress beyond the group stages but it didn’t pan out to be a smooth ride with the footballing giants struggling against Iran and Morocco in the last group games.

The European Champions opened the scoring thanks to Ricardo Quaresma’s beautifully curled finish, Cristiano Ronaldo had the opportunity to double the lead from the spot but ended up missing it. The Iranians who produced a magnificent display pressed on despite being 1-0 down for the majority of the game. However, the reward came late in the game when the referee awarded a penalty via VAR that was expertly finished by Taremi. The Asians almost wrapped up the three points when Taremi shot from close only to find the side netting.

Meanwhile, Spain who hadn’t tasted defeat for 22 matches in a run stretching back to Euro 2016 squared up against the North Africans in Kaliningrad. The Moroccans were playing for pride and struggling to register a goal since the last World Cup in 1998. All that changed as the Atlas Lions capitalized on the mistake of the Spanish defence to race to an early lead.

Fernando Hierro’s led team fought back via Isco to level the scores. That was not the end for the African side that restored their lead thanks to Khalid Boutaib who coolly slid the ball via David De Gea’s legs. The drama heightened heading towards the tail end of the game before Iago Aspas secured a 2-2 in the 93rd minute to ensure qualification for Spain.

Uruguay and Portugal will trade tackles in the round of 16, while Spain has confirmed a date against host Russia.
