Salah becomes the first African player to win FWA

Liverpool winger Mohammed Salah has been crowned the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year.

The Egyptian forward once again beat closest rivals Kevin de Bruyne (Manchester City) and Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur) to add the award to his accolade this season.

The former Basel player set a new record by becoming the first African footballer to land this prestigious individual award in English football history.

Salah, 25, has been in a superb form for his club this campaign scoring 43 goals and assisting 15 in all competitions. His performances have drawn comparisons to the likes of  Messi and Ronaldo, with most fans claiming he will become the outright winner of Ballon d’Or if Liverpool seals the Champions League title.

Liverpool fans have run out of superlatives to describe their “Egyptian King” who makes them stand on their feet and breathless each time he’s running down the flanks. You can always tell there’s something special coming from a player who’s in a purple-patch once he is on the ball. His match-winning performances and record-breaking season have endeared him to the Kop and made him the fan’s favorite.

Reports claim that the votes were too close to call between De Bruyne and Salah, leading to the tightest contest since the late 60’s. The FWA boss Patrick Barclay went further to describe the battle between the two as “the toughest call since 1968-69” when there was a dead heat between Tony Book of Manchester City and Derby’s Dave Mackay.

“Right up to the last week or so we thought it might happen again, so strong was the support for Kevin de Bruyne,” said Barclay.

“But Mo Salah’s relentless match-winning form, exemplified by his two great goals against Roma, seems to have swung the vote by a very narrow margin.”

Liverpool will be in action later tonight in Rome as they bid to secure their ninth European Cup/Champions League final for the first time since 2007. Jurgen Klopp has described the second leg encounter as the fight for their dreams.
