Reviewing Chelsea’s Seven 2020 Signings

In a bid to close the gap between Chelsea and the reigning champions, Liverpool Frank
Lampard brought in seven players. He was entrusted with a huge budget after guiding his
team to a third finish behind Manchester United on goal difference. As the season began,
punters got ready with their Bet365 bonus code as they looked forward to a great season
for the blues, for a great betting opportunity. Chelsea had to make do with academy
graduates Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount, Fikayo Timori, and Reece James as they were
serving a transfer ban in the previous transfer window.

Lampard had 200 million GBP to bolster his squad. Chelsea had already agreed on terms
with Hakim Ziyech. In the summer, they went for Kai Havertz and Timo Werner. Other
arrivals included Ben Chilwell and Eduard Mendy. Thiago Silva and Malang Sarr also made
moves to Stamford Bridge.

Lampard was sacked after he failed to live up to expectations, and Thomas Tuchel took
over. So how have the new signings fared so far? Read on to find out.

Timo Werner

Werner arrived with an excellent reputation in Europe as one of the best strikers. However,
he has not found his Bundesliga form in the EPL yet. He had a bright start to his Chelsea
career, scoring four goals in his first eight games.

Lampard could not get the best out of the striker, and the new coach will be hoping the
striker finds his confidence back. So far, he has not lived up to expectations.

Kai Havertz

Havertz was a generational signing that came with an element of risk. Chelsea trusted his
capabilities, and that is why they splashed 71 million GBP for his signature. However, he
has had a tough time settling in his new environment battling injuries and the coronavirus.
Tuchel deploys Havertz as a false nine, a role that looks to suit him well. He has scored five
goals this season but is yet to score under Tuchel. There is no denying his talent; the only
task is getting it out of him.

Hakim Ziyech

Ziyech arrived in England with a lot of promise. A knee injury hampered his start to the
season. However, he netted a goal and provided three assists to mark his arrival. But, he got
a hip injury in December that halted his progress.

Tuchel has given Ziyech plenty of chances, and he has repaid his manager’s trust in him by
scoring twice to help the Blues progress in two cup competitions. His more central role as a
number 10 seems to suit him well and could end the season on a high.

Thiago Silva

Thiago Silva was a key part of Lampard’s defense. The departure of Lampard and the
arrival of Tuchel did not hamper his progress because Tuchel had managed him at PSG. An
injury he picked against Spurs in February kept him out for 10 matches.

His return was one he would want to forget fast as he got a red card that led to his team
losing by five goals against West Brom. That also handed Tuchel his first defeat in the EPL.
Nevertheless, he has helped bring calm in the Chelsea defense and could earn one more
year in London.

Ben Chilwell

Chilwell arrived at the capitol as Engand’s first-choice left-back. The 50 million GBP price
tag came with lots of expectations. He had a good start under Lampard, but his
performances became poor with time.

Tuchel’s formation of five at the back has earned Marcos Alonso a new lease of life. Chilwell
has also gotten some game time, but his form has continued to dip. But his time outside the
starting 11 seems to have woken him up from his slumber, and he has started improving. It
has not been a bad season for him, but he has also not been outstanding.

Edouard Mendy

Mendy came in to replace Kepa as Chelsea’s number one. His debut season for the Blues has
been excellent, save for a couple of mistakes. His 11 clean sheets in 14 games under
Tuschel have given a glimpse of what he is capable of.

However, the Blues are linked with AC Milan’s Gianluigi Donarumma, showing that his
number might not be cemented yet.

Malang Sarr

Sarr arrived on a free transfer and was immediately loaned out to FC Porto. He has featured
20 times for the Portuguese side. He could face his parent club in the Champions League
quarter-finals. Chelsea will be impressed with his progress, but he could still spend another
season on loan.
