Relegation battle: West Brom relegated after Saints victory

West Bromwich Albion have been relegated from the Premier League after Southampton defeated Swansea to keep their survival hopes alive.

The day started well for the Baggies as caretaker manager Darren Moore won April’s Premier League Manager of the month award for his tremendous work at the club (masterminding three wins and two draws). They needed that run of luck to continue in the game at the Liberty Stadium between Swansea and Southampton.

However, their fairytale would have continued if the game ended in a stalemate. It was instead the opposite as Italian striker Gabbiadini poached in from close range to seal the win for the south-coast club.

Only a few believed the Baggies would mount a sustained charge for survival in what has been a disastrous campaign on and off the Pitch. Former manager Alan Pardew managed only one win in 17 games leaving the club at the bottom of the table.

What next? : Swansea and Huddersfield

Swansea’s loss to the Saints means they are equally on the brink of relegation. With three points behind Huddersfield and Southampton- who boasts of a more significant goal difference by nine.

Huddersfield are the only side the Swans can catch, should the Terriers fail to win their remaining two fixtures and Swansea beat Stoke City on the last day. The Welsh side are three points behind David Wagner’s teamĀ butĀ have a superior goal difference.

The newly-promoted side would ensure their stay in the top flight with a win in their upcoming fixtures starting with Chelsea tonight.
