Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp uses a completely different tactical system to that of Pep Guardiola, says Barcelona defender Gerard Pique.
Pique returned to the Camp Nou in 2008 during Guardiola’s reign following a four-year spell at Manchester United.
The Spanish defender emerged as one of the most sought-after defenders in European football under Guardiola’s tutelage and has since been a prominent member of the Barcelona squad.
But even the 31-year-old reckoned that his former boss would find it tougher this season due to the football Liverpool produce.
Klopp’s style of a high-octane counter-attack defeated City thrice last season, and they are expected to launch a full-scale title challenge in the Premier League after recruiting heavily this summer.
The Reds have backed that up with three successive wins without conceding a goal.
And Pique as a theory on the key to their success.
“I think Jurgen is doing a great job at Liverpool,” said Pique, according to Liverpool Echo.
“Because the style of play is the opposite of Guardiola.
“They really like to counter-attack and have speedy players up front and score goals with (Mohamed) Salah, (Roberto) Firmino and (Sadio) Mane.”
When asked who will win the league title, Pique replied: “We will see, it will be challenging for Man City, because Liverpool have a great team and I think it will be quite exciting.
“I think City are a little bit favourites, but you never know. (In the) Premier League, anything can happen.”
Klopp will be hoping to end Liverpool’s title drought as they aim to win the Premier League trophy for the first time.
