Anthony Martial’s future at Manchester United is hanging by a thread after Jose Mourinho recently revealed he is uncertain if the French player will return to the squad.
Martial,25, flew back to Paris to be at the birth of his baby son with partner Melanie Da Cruz in what many reports claim were against the manager’s wishes.
United went on to lose 4-1 in their next game against bitter rivals Liverpool, and a furious Mourinho responded in a press conference by calling for Martial to come back.
“He has the baby and after the baby is born – beautiful baby, full of health, thank God – he should be here, and he is not here,’ said Mourinho, having previously made a pointed reference to it being Martial’s second child.
After United finished their US tour by beating Real Madrid in Miami without the absent Martial and prepared to fly home in the early hours of Wednesday, Mourinho was asked if the French winger would return to the group. “I don’t know,” replied Mourinho after initially ducking a question about Martial.
The Red Devils will return to England on Wednesday, and the Portuguese gaffer will give the players who went on the tour Thursday off. They will re-assemble at Carrington on Friday, and it remains to be seen if Martial returns to the club.
United will kick off their Premier League campaign against Claude Puel’s Leicester City on the 1oth of August.
