Looking past Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, we have a new player. After the six years rule by the Portuguese and the Argentinian, Luka Modric is known to have been voted the best male football player of 2018 by Guardian.
Luka Modric has also won the Ballon d’Or award this year. He has finished 284 points ahead of Messi and 246 ahead of Ronaldo. This is not an inconsiderable amount after 225 judges had cast their vote.
Each and every judge had Luka Modric in their list, among the top 40 players for 2018 with only 79 of them placing the midfielder from Real Madrid in the first place. It is pretty clear that this year’s World Cup has played a significant part in the result of Guardian this year. It was due to Modric that Croatia had been able to make it to finals. However, Argentina had been uninspiring prior to the elimination in last sixteen by France. Moreover, Ronaldo had not been able to build on the incredible hat-trick in his game against Spain.
The World Cup ha an influence on the list. It is inconceivable that player like Jorda Pickford, Harry Maguire, and Denis Cheryshev was able to make it to the list without that particular month in Russia. Again, Paul Pogba wouldn’t have ended up at Number 16 or even Lukaku at Number 41 if this list had been on the basis of the form they had in the club matches.
