Messi sentenced to 21 months in jail for tax fraud

Spain’s Supreme Court handed the term down last year. And today the sentence for Leo Messi and his father was confirmed. But it’s unlikely that Barcelona star to go to the prison. In Spain, all terms less than 2 years can be served under probation.

Lionel and Jorge Messi was convicted of defrauding Spain in 2016. They concealed taxes in the amount of €4.1m. Also, their terms were reduced because Messi family have already paid some sum.

For each of three crimes, Lionel Messi should serve 7 months and pay a fine of 532,313.31 euros. Jorge Messi’s term was reduced to 15 months.

They are both were found guilty of resorting to fictitious companies to evade Spanish taxes. The 29-years-old striker told that he didn’t know anything about the tax avoidance and fake companies that used his image rights. But Spanish State Attorney gave “zero credibility” to that claim. The court said: “It defies logic to concede that players, who earn large income don’t know about taxes”.
