Manchester United, Liverpool set to feature in first FIFA Super Club World Cup

Liverpool and Manchester United are among the ten confirmed participants to feature in the new FIFA club competition set to debut in 2021.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has backed the concept since he took over the office and had received the green light by top European Clubs.

FIFA’s proposal consists of a 24-team competition held every four years, during the second half of June. This competition would, therefore, replace the current tournaments: the Confederations Cup and the Club World Cup.

The first edition will take place in three years time under the name, Club World Championship once all necessary arrangements are in place.

Dates for the event have been established. It will run from June 10 to 28, containing eight groups of three teams, followed by a quarter-final, semi-final, and final.

It means there will be minimum of two matches and a maximum of five. No location has been selected, but China are keen to become the first hosts.

Europe will have more representatives with 12 teams, and South America would be the second most represented continent with four or five clubs while Africa, Asia, and North America will provide two clubs respectively.

Oceania would have its representative playoff in a duel with the ‘fifth-best placed’ team in South America, while the host team would complete the quota of 24.

Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona have supported the introduction of the new competition. On Sunday, Real Madrid director Emilio Butragueno revealed Los Blancos were in favour of the proposal, becoming the first major club to openly back the idea. Whereas the Catalan club believes the FIFA formula “would contribute to the growth of the brands of the clubs and would provide a new source of income.”

And the Spanish press report they, along with United and Liverpool, will be among the sides guaranteed a place in 2021.

Bayern Munich, AC Milan, Inter, Juventus, Ajax and Paris Saint-Germain are the other teams who will undoubtedly be present.
