German goalkeeper Loris Karius has admitted his mistakes in the Champions League final cost Liverpool the chance of winning their sixth European Cup.
The former Mainz shot-stopper has apologized to everyone at the club for the two errors he committed that gifted Los Blancos the title for an unprecedented third time running.
Real Madrid ran out 3-1 winners on the night but were helped by the Liverpool goalkeeper who threw the ball straight to Benzema that scored from close range to open the account for his team. Sadio Mane equalized afterward from a corner. However, Bale’s brilliant overhead kick put Madrid in the ascendancy. Karius was at it again late in the game when he let Gareth Bale’s long-range strike slip through his hands to wrap up the tie.
Speaking after the game, Karius said: “I don’t feel anything right now.
“Today I lost my team the game, and I feel sorry for everyone – from the team, from the whole club – that the mistakes cost dearly.
“If I could go back in time I would. I feel sorry for my team. I know I let them down today. These goals cost us the title basically.
“It’s very hard right now, but that’s the life of a goalkeeper. You have to get your head up again.”
The young goalie was in tears at the end of the encounter as he realized the magnitude of his blunders and was consoled by players from both sides.
When further quizzed on his team-mates reaction to his performance, Karius said: “Of course everyone tried to cheer me up.
“But there was just silence everywhere because everyone was really disappointed.”
Liverpool fans were totally gutted and disappointed with the result and most of them vented their anger on Twitter and other social media platforms.
Yes Karius made 2 massive mistakes yesterday and yes it’s frustrating for Liverpool fans, I get that but some of these ‘so called’ Liverpool fans that have been wishing death on Karius and various other things are sick, vile human beings
