Josep Maria Bartomeu shared that Liverpool would only sell Philippe Coutinho for 200m euros. This price was not acceptable for Barcelona chiefs so the deal.
Liverpool chiefs denied all claims they are putting a price tag on Coutinho, but Barca’ president mentioned many times they could not meet Financial Fair Play rules under the deal.
“I cannot say how much we were ready to spend, but Liverpool asked for £200m. We were not going to give £200m or £150m because it is a very expensive market for us”.
“However, we would agree on the €120m transfer fee with add-ons. Barcelona cannot afford more because we need to make some investments into La Masia and the club’s academy. We must respect the rules”, answered Josep Bartomeu.
Barcelona spent £97m for Ousmane Dembele from Borussia. They were able to afford the transfer fee due to Neymar’ £200m deal. But today Dembele is facing four months out after thigh injury during winning 2-1 match vs Getafe.
