At the end of the day, Kerala Blasters got their new Indian Super League season going with their first point after a 0-0 stalemate with Delhi Dynamos. However, clock is ticking for the 2014 finalists as they play their third successive match at home ground and need to make it count for more than just a draw in their last match. There was a bit more attacking power in their last game, and giving a start to marksman Michael Chopra appeared to work well for head coach Steve Coppell, as the English forward added some physical presence into the squad. However, Kerala will need to do something they have never done before, as their four previous matches against their next opponent from Mumbai have ended in three draws and a loss. They have also never scored at home against Mumbai.

Meanwhile, Mumbai City have based their strategy in the 2016 Indian Super League around a steadfast defensive line, but they did show some encouraging attacking flair in their previous game with Atletico de Kolkata, thanks mainly to Matias Defederico. The inclusion of Boithang Haokip in place of marquee player Diego Forlan, whose availability for this game on the road is unconfirmed, added zip going forward. Mumbai have only conceded one goal, and that has been down to some organizational discipline in the team coached by Alexandre Guimaraes. One key player in that defensive line, Pronay Halder, will be missing though, due to a red card in the last match in Mumbai.
