Midfielder Joey Barton was banned for 18 months. Football Association made the decision after hearing over breaches of betting rules.
Barton has placed 1,260 bets on football over a span of 10 years and FA charged him for the illegal gamble. In February he requested a personal hearing about prosecution, but it didn’t really affect the situation.
Today FA statement says: “Joey Barton has been suspended from football activity for 18 months after admitting an FA misconduct charge in relation to betting. He placed 1,260 bets between 26 March 2006 and 13 May 2016. He placed on conduct, progress, result or any else aspect on football matches in breach of FA Rule E8”. In addition, Barton was fined by £30,000 and warned about future conduct.
34 y.o. midfielder issued next statement: “The decision forces me to end my career early and take retirement from football. I accept that I have broken the rules, but the penalty is tougher than it could be for other players. I tried to cure my gambling addiction and provided a medical report to FA. But it wasn’t taken into proper consideration”.
