Hazard penalty seals F.A Cup trophy for Chelsea

Eden Hazard’s goal from the spot was all that Chelsea needed to beat toothless Manchester United in the F.A Cup final at Wembley Stadium.

The Blues won their eighth F.A Cup title as they avoided losing back to back finals after losing to London rivals Arsenal last year.

The game began with tributes to Ray Wilkins, who died on April 4. Wilkins won the FA Cup four times — once as a former United player and three times as a Chelsea assistant coach — and his widow, Jackie, presented the FA Cup to Chelsea in place of William, the Duke of Cambridge, the chairman of the Football Association, who attended the wedding of his brother, Prince Harry, earlier in the day.

Hazard received a through ball from Cesc Fabregas in the 21st minute, The Belgian playmaker expertly controlled the pass, raced goalwards and was brought down by onrushing United defender Phil Jones which resulted to a penalty and a booking from Micheal Oliver. Hazard who was making his 300th appearance for the club stepped up and coolly converted from the spot.

Afterward, Chelsea slowed the tempo of the game but almost paid the price on the stroke of half-time when Phil Jones glancing header found the side netting from Ashley Young’s cross.

A rejuvenated United returned to the second half as they penned Antonio Conte’s men in their half. They dominated most of the game but failed to find the back of the net. However, the Red Devils dominance was almost rewarded with a goal in the 82nd minute when an unmarked Paul Pogba headed wide in front of goal.

The introduction of Lukaku who started from the bench due to an ankle injury and the duo of Mata and Martial failed to find the equalizer.

Chelsea’s victory meant that Antonio Conte avoided the record of Everton’s coach Howard Kendall who lost back to back finals in 1985 and 1986.
