Griezzi fires Atletico Madrid to Europa League glory

Antoine Griezmann bagged a brace as Atletico Madrid breezed past Marseille to win 3-0 and claim their third Europa League title in nine years.

The 27-year-old French striker, who has been on the radar of top clubs in Europe, scored in each half with skipper Gabi striking late to complete a 3-0 victory for the Spaniards.

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone could only watch from the stands having been hit with a four-game ban for being sent-off during the semi-final first leg at Arsenal but was contented to see his side win easily.

Rudi Garcia’s men found it difficult to carve out an opening against one of Europe’s meanest defences and their chances further depleted when they lost Dimitri Payet to injury in the first half.

The French side should have been in front inside the opening 4 minutes with Payet teeing up Germain who fired wide.

Griezmann who has been prolific in the competition since his club’s exit from the Champions League proved to be the difference in the game.

Diego Simeone credited the excellent bond of his players as the key to success saying “We’re very happy. We’ve been working very well these past years, We’ve always said the best way to get back to winning ways is by persisting. The coaching staff have been lucky enough to find very strong men and footballers who have been improving year after year. I have a great communion with my players and I can be at home or in the hotel but they will still play the same way,” the 48-year-old manager concluded.

It was a night to remember for Fernando Torres who won the first and may likely be the last trophy with his boyhood club in what was his last game for the Rojiblancos.
