FIFA plan to expand World Cup to 48 teams

The South American football association (CONMEBOL) have made a formal plea to the game’s governing body to expand the World Cup to 48 teams in the next tournament (Qatar 2022), four years ahead of the designed plan in 2026.

The Latin Americans made this demand in a letter addressed to FIFA president Gianni Infantino at the association’s annual conference in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

As we think big, and because we want justice, because we want you and all our companions to want to think big, I am asking that the 2022 World Cup is played with 48 teams,’ CONMEBOL president Alejandro Dominguez said.

In January 2017, FIFA agreed to increase the number of teams in the World Cup from its current 32 teams to 48 teams in 2026. The South Americans presently have five guaranteed spots in the current format, and that number will rise to six or 60 percent of all member nations – at a 48-team tournament.

Qatar is ready to host the World in 2022, setting the record of the first nation to stage the tournament in the Middle East.

The hosting rights of the 2026 World Cup will be awarded in June, with Morocco planning to become the second African nation to host the World Cup as they hope to overcome the joint bid from the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
