The Blaugrana were eliminated from last year’s competition in the quarter finals stage by domestic rivals Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid on a 3–2 aggregate. Barcelona were unbeaten until the second leg at Madrid and were leading 2–1 on aggregate. But they surrendered the lead and bow out of the competition with a 2–0 defeat. They have an excellent home record in the competition after winning in 15 of the last 16 matches at Camp Nou. Though, Barcelona endured an early setback in their La Liga title defence on Saturday night when they were surprisingly defeated 2–1 at Camp Nou by the newly-promoted Alaves. Goalkeeper Marc Ande-ter Stegen is still out for Barcelona, as is new midfielder Andre Gomes.

Meanwhile, Celtic return to the UEFA Champions League for the first time since 2013/14. It was a forgettable outing for the Scottish Champions as they finished a bottom of their group behind Barcelona, Milan and Ajax. They suffered the heaviest defeat in the trip to Camp Nou in which the score-line was a 6–1 trashing at full-time. Celtic’s star forward Leigh Griffiths is expected to be back after a minor knee injury, while centre back Dedryck Boyata is still sidelined.
