Crystal Palace looked like potential relegation candidates after their terrible start to the campaign. They ended last season with a minor scuffle in the relegation battle and started the new campaign with consecutive 1–0 losses to West Brom and Spurs. However, a 2–0 victiry over Blackpool in the League Cup plus the signing of Christian Benteke seemed to boost the Crystal Palace spirit. They followed their League Cup win with a 1–1 stalemate at their home ground to Bournemouth and then grabbed all three points away from home when they beat newly-promoted Middlesbrough 2–1 last weekend. This is a promising turnaround in form for Alan Pardew’s side, and with their long-term striking problems potentially solved by the arrival of Benteke they could be in for a more comfortable season than many fans feared.
Meanwhile, Stoke have started their season in terrible fashion. They failed to beat the Middlesbrough in their debut fixture of the 2016/2017 season, but looking back on it that seems a good result in comparison to their more recent performances. The Britannia turned bet365 Stadium used to be a fortress of defensive solidity and hard work, but that edge seems to have been noticeably dulled by Mark Hughes’ attempts at turning them into a more attractive footballing team. Stoke have looked awful at times this season and are showing next to none of the flair we saw developing last term. Crystal Palace are still a relatively poor attacking side, but Stoke’s tragic defensive form will excite Benteke.
