The Blues have signed Edouard Mendy from Rennes in a deal worth about £22 million, and the goalkeeper could be thrown straight into action when Chelsea travel to West Brom soon. The 28-year-old player, who won eight international caps, has signed a contract for five years and is hoped to compete with current No1 Kepa Arrizabalaga who has struggled ever since joining Chelsea for a record fee of £72 million. The former Reims man made 25 appearances for Rennes since his arrival in 2019. The Senegal internationalhas been one of the top goalkeepers in Ligue 1. He has been listed as a keeper with the second highest save percentage in the French top flight last season, while Kepa ended up at the bottom of the same rankings in the Premier League. Mendy becomes Frank Lampard’s eighth new arrival this transfer window. The footballer follows the example of goalkeeper Petr Cech, who moved to Chelsea from Rennes in 2004 and is currently the Blues’ technical advisor.
