Barcelona Could Not Afford To Sign Memphis Depay On Deadline Day

Barcelona have eyed Lyon’s Memphis Depay this transfer window, but it seems the Catalan club failed to sign him on deadline day.  It happened despite the fact that Lyon reportedly dropped their asking price for the 26-year player.

The Netherlands international’s current contract expires next summer, and Blaugrana were strictly connected with his services during the latter stages of the summer transfer window.

De Telegraaf reported that the French club reduced the price for Depay to €25 million to agree the transfer, but the Spanish side failed to collect the necessary funds. Lyon may currently lose the forward on a free transfer next season, while the Catalan giants are quite happy, having allowed Suarez to move to Atletico Madrid.

Barca have signed Trincao, Sergiño Dest, Matheus Fernandes, Miralem Pjanic, and Pedri during this summer, but they were unable to get their main target, Lautaro Martinez.
