Atletico de Kolkata are the inaugural champions of the Indian Super League and are yet to taste a defeat in their campaign in 2016. That shouldn’t divert attention from a lack of sharpness this term in one of the league’s most consistent teams. Their only victory came by a narrow 1-0 margin against a Kerala Blasters team that defended their ranks well, but were undone by a deflection off a shot by Javi Lara, who has scored two out of Kolkata’s four goals thus far. They had to equalise in both their draws against Chennaiyin and Mumbai City, and failed to capitalise on the latter having a player sent off with almost 20 minutes to play. The manager Jose Molina made some drastic changes in the second half away to Mumbai, including pulling off the key figure of Iain Hume, and how he approaches the second game of the season at the Rabindra Sarobar Stadium could have significant ramifications on the rest of the Kolkata season.

Meanwhile, FC Goa are in need to turn their season around after a sequence of three losses to start the 2016 season. It will be a little consolation for head coach Zico that two of those matches were on the road at the Nehru Stadium, Fatorda. Zico has found the Atletico de Kolkata impossible to solve, as a matter of fact. These teams have met six times across two seasons, and four of them were stalemates, including two matches of the 2014 semi-finals, which Kolkata won on penaltiesspot-kicks. The other two fixtures were won by Atletico de Kolkata, including a 4-0 in their last match in Kolkata. Only Chennaiyin have ever beaten Goa that badly in Indian Super League history, and the three scorers from that win – Hume, Sameehg Doutie and Borja Fernandez – are still key performers in the Kolkata squad.
