Arsene Wenger aiming to finish on a high

Arsenal players are keen to give departing Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger the ideal gift by clinching the Europa League title.

Arsenal FC announced last week Friday that Wenger would be stepping down from his position at the club after 22 years of service. The Gunners will have to overcome Spanish giants Atletico Madrid over two legs in the Semi-finals of the competition to stand a chance contesting the Europa League final in Lyon next month.

Wenger has never won a title in Europe in his entire career at the club despite appearing in two finals. However, it would be a remarkable achievement to wrap up his tenure with that elusive trophy and secure Champions League football for next season.

Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey has lavished praise on the gaffer who signed him back in 2008. He went on to confess the announcement of Wenger’s departure was a shock to both him and the entire team. He went on to charge the whole team to give the outgoing boss one last trophy.

He said: “It’s a massive motivation, to put the emotional side to one side and use it to go on and win this trophy for him.
“It’s going to be weird next season when he’s not here but for now he is, and we have to finish the season off as strongly as possible. You’ve seen with the number of fans that turned up on Sunday, and the noise they produced when they got right behind the team, and hopefully, they can give him the send-off he deserves.

“We all knew that one day he was always going to step down as manager, and that day has come and it was a massive shock to the team.
“But we have to put those emotions behind us and use it as motivation as well to finish off the season strongly, and hopefully we can lift something for him and let the other emotions come in after that when the season is finished. Then we’ll go from there.”

Arsenal will be wary of the threat posed by Atletico Madrid with the likes of Antoine Griezmann and Diego Costa likely to partner in the attack. They will have to keep this duo at bay if they want to keep a clean sheet ahead of the second leg in Estadio Metropolitano next week.
